People Want Media On Their Own Terms
Jan 18th, 2007 | By James Lewin | Category: Digital Video Downloads, Digital Video Recorder, Video PodcastsThere’s an interesting article in the NYT today about people wanting more from their TVs.
Padmasree Warrior, the chief technology officer of Motorola, said consumers now demand more from their televisions, largely thanks to TiVo, which has forced the cable companies to ask suppliers for more innovative set-top boxes. “Enough people are experienced with time-shifting that there’s a demand that the industry dynamics change,” Ms. Warrior said.
People want more than TiVo. The success the TiVi has had is a result of the fact that it has gotten closer to delivering media on people’s own terms than other solutions.
People want to enjoy media when and where they want to, without arbitrary technological barriers. Podcasting is another major step towards this, and podcasting, combined with the emergence of devices that merge television with the Internet, like Apple TV, will get us closer to what people want than ever before.

Will Apple Open Up Fairplay DRM?
Jan 17th, 2007 | By James Lewin | Category: Digital Music, iPods & Portable Media PlayersAccording to reports, Apple plans to open up the Fairplay digital rights management software that is used to control the use of music and movies content bought from the iTunes Store.
The iPod maker is expected to make two announcements, possibly as early as this week – the first will be to allow streaming of protected AAC content via USB; the second will be to license its Fairplay DRM to the company’s Made For iPod licencees.
The result of this change would be to let you play songs and videos purchased through iTunes on third party devices using digital connections. It may also mean that devices like iPod docks will be able to display more information – artwork and other track info, for example – which is stored alongside the protected audio.
There has been no official announcement from Apple, but it could be a move to limit the backlash over Apple’s dominance in DRM’d media.

XBox Video Sales To Hit 90 Million In 2007
Jan 16th, 2007 | By James Lewin | Category: Digital Video Downloads, Video
Sales of TV shows and movies via Xbox Live could reach $92.25 million in 2007, growing each year through 2011, when the aggregate revenue from the sale of both types of content could top $726 million, according to reports. This is expected to grow each year through 2011, when the aggregate revenue from the sale of both types of content could top $726 million.
The total revenue generated from the sale of video via XBox Live would still still be a small portion of Microsoft’s overall revenues. If video revenue reaches $726.50 million in 2007, that would represent only 1.6% of the total $44.2 billion that Microsoft generated in Fiscal Year 2006.
