Banned in Canada: iPods?

Jun 16th, 2006 | By | Category: iPods & Portable Media Players

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) is calling on all Provincial governments to restrict the use of iPods, cell phones and other electronic devices by novice drivers.

“Novice drivers are subject to many restrictions as they learn to drive, such as not driving on four-lane highways and not driving during certain hours,” said CAA President David Flewelling. “By also restricting the use of electronic devices, such as cell phones, MP3 players and wireless hand-held devices, they can truly focus on the driving task.”

“It is also our hope that a preventative measure like this one will create a generation of motorists who recognize the severe implications of driver distractions – and work towards reducing them where they can.”

According to a study released in April 2006 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the many forms of distractions are collectively responsible for as many as eight out of every ten crashes.”Driver distraction is the greatest unreported traffic safety issue in Canada,” said Flewelling. “This is why CAA is also calling on drivers, passengers, employers, automobile manufacturers, and technology developers to reduce or eliminate as many distractions as possible from the driving experience. Driving is not a passive activity – it is a complex task that requires the driver’s full attention.”

The call is part of the organization’s Driven to Distraction campaign.

Sony has introduced a podcast, the Sony Online Entertainment Podcast, that covers Sony online gaming.

The first episode (MP3) provides an insider’s look at EverQuest.

EverQuest Community Manager Christina “Kytherea” Delzer interviews Game Designer Jason “Maddoc” Mash about the Progression Server, a new server type in the works for EQ fans launching at the end of the month; EverQuest II Community Manager Ryan “Blackguard” Shwayder talks about the latest happenings in EQII, including a wrap up of the SOE Fan Faire in Atlanta, an update on PvP, and information on both the next EQII adventure pack (The Fallen Dynasty) as well as the upcoming third expansion pack (Echoes of Faydwer); and Associate Producer Leah Ruben discusses the latest changes and updates to the console world of EverQuest Online Adventures. The podcast is a little stiff, as if the podcasters are reading, rather than talking. Sony would be smart to loosen future episodes up, so that the podcast captures more of the excitement of the game designers and their work.

St. John Ambulance, a UK charity organization, is using podcasting to help distribute first aid information. The First Aid Advice podcasts provide information on situations ranging from treating shock (MP3) to dealing with severe wounds (MP3).

The organization plans to releast new podcasts every Wednesday throughout the summer, covering treatment for a wide range of injuries, including seizures, head injuries and heart attacks.”We want to make First Aid as accessible as possible, but don’t want to bombard people with information all in one go,” said Dr Barbara Cleaver, medical adviser at St. John Ambulance. “Podcasting will allow us to publish the tips every week throughout the summer so that people have a chance to listen to and digest each bit of information.”
