Is PodShow Still Hijacking Podcasts?
Jul 9th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Audio Podcasting, Podcasting Law
Some podcasters are concerned that PodShow’s updated site may still be “hijacking” podcaster’s feeds. In a post to the Podcasting News forum, David Shapiro (of the Next Big Hit) writes that “Popular non podshow podcasts have rewritten feed links for WMP, Winamp and Realplayer.”
“We never asked for these feeds to be created for Next Big Hit New Music Mix, or Next Big Hit Indie Insider,” adds Shapiro. “We weren’t even aware of their existence until we read the report about the XML feeds on podcasting-news.com.”
The links appear to be provided to streamline listening in various media players.
Earlier in the week, an updated version of the PodShow site was released. At that time, Geek News Central’s Todd Cochrane found that “Podshow has hijacked every listed podcasters RSS Feed, stripped out data and inserted their own info.”

PodShow Updates Site to Eliminate Podcast Hijacking; It Was a Silly Mistake, Says Adam Curry
Jul 8th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Audio Podcasting, Podcasting Law, Strange
PodShow, which has come under heated criticism because the updated PodShow site hijacked podcasters feeds, has quickly updated their site to fix the problem.Instead of linking to podcasters’ original podcast feeds, PodShow was rewriting feeds, removing podcasters’ copyright notices and republishing them under PodShow URLs.
PodShow was quick to respond to the firestorm that erupted in response to the controversy. Yesterday, PodShow’s Adam Curry, right, noted that the company needed to fix some problems with the new version of the PodShow site, including the feed links. PodShow’s feed links have been updated to point to podcasters’ original podcast feeds.
“All xml icons on PodShow+ should now be hyperlinked to the original feed url.,” said Curry in response to the controversy. “This also resolves the copyright re-writing issues.”
“Silly mistake on our part,” blogs Adam Curry. “Interesting presumptions from some folks.”

Corporate Podcasting Summit Follow Up
Jul 8th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Corporate Podcasts, Podcasting EventsThe Corporate Podcasting Summit, described as Enterprise Podcasting 101, was held June 20 – 21 in San Francisco. The Summit brought together people interested in corporate podcasting from around the world.

Above, Elisabeth McLaury Lewin, Publisher of Podcasting News, at the Corporate Podcasting Summit with (l to r) Mark Blevis (podcasters across borders, electric sky podcast, canadian podcast buffet), Tim Keegan (of Story Quest, which created Keane’s corporate podcast), and Dave Mansueto of Libsyn.
Lewin caught up with Summit organizer Anita Yaa Ageyman back in her home base of England, and asked her about the successes, challenges and surprises of the event.
Ageyman, right, also reveals some of her thoughts for future Corporate Podcasting Summits.Elisabeth McLaury Lewin: What have you been up to since you flew back to England?
Anita Yaa Ageyman: I’ve been pulling together plans, cobbling ideas of where next and getting over excited about how I’m going to serve the corporate podcasting community better with news /reports /podcasts and who knows what else.
Lewin: Have you recovered yet from last weekend’s summit?
Ageyman:Yes! I am finally recovered. I’ve spent the last 3 weeks preparing the show’s content for distribution. I’m already working on the next 2 projects in Europe and on the East Coast of the United States.
Lewin: What were the final attendance numbers? Can you break out the attendees by corporate / government-nonprofit/ technology sector and whatnot?
Ageyman: We had 84 attendees in total, not bad for a show that had to be put together and marketed in the space of 4.5 months.
Just under 30% of attendees were corporate. Just over 25% came from the technology sector. 15% came from advertising/marketing agencies. And the remaining attendees included private podcasters, industry analysts and
consultants, and the press.
Lewin: Were you surprised by the response to the event?
Ageyman: I was surprised by the amount of buzz and excitement the event created! If only the show was scheduled to take place in the 3rd quarter of the year, we would have at least doubled, if not quadrupled, attendee numbers and proved an ever better networking event for all.
Lewin: What challenges came up?
Ageyman: Finding the right speakers from the corporate side was sometimes a challenge. It’s still a relatively new communication channel for many a corporation so, outside of the FTSE 100 company podcasts we hear about every other day, the challenge was to find the other companies doing great things with the podcast and get them to share their experience.
Lewin: What surprised you about the Summit?
Ageyman: How fantastically passionate, energetic and friendly the whole community is. The sense of all being in it together and really wanting to learn and grow from one another is a great thing.
Lewin: What predictions or expectations did you have that came true?
Ageyman: That there would be a lot of interest from the corporate community. To this day I am still getting a good number of emails from executives about the show.
Lewin: How big of a team worked on the Summit?
Ageyman: Just one, me, and that’s not because I’m an awful team player! I had a colleague who looked after the logistical side of things, like the venue, accommodation etc, but everything else was down to me!
Lewin: What sort of feedback have you been getting?
Ageyman: Feedback has been very positive. It seems people learned an incredible amount from the summit and made some excellent contacts.
Lewin: I had a really good time and learned so much at this Summit. Will you do it all again? If you do, will you have any plans or changes in store for next year’s conference?
Ageyman: Yes, definitely! I am already planning a show in London and one for the East Coast in 2007. The idea is to have an East and West Coast summit, and ones in Europe too. The one change perhaps for future shows is to organise a separate stream for companies completely new to podcasting, somewhere they can get all the information they need in simple, easy to digest English. That way the more podcast savvy of the audience can wax lyrical with as many acronyms as their hearts are content with!
Lewin: What excited you the most, personally, about the show?
Ageyman: The fact that it was the first meeting place for the corporate podcasting community. I think the community will grow stronger and bolder as the months progress and I would be honoured to be the meeting place where we all converge face-to-face.

The Rocketboom Saga: Condensed
Jul 7th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Video Podcasts, VlogsThe public split of Rocketboom co-producers Andrew Baron and Amanda Congdon is too convoluted to make much sense of and it’s starting to get ugly.
Here’s a condensed version of the events that have been made public:
- Amanda Congdon announces she’s been UnBoomed, saying that Baron no longer wanted to be her partner.
- Baron said that it was news to him. “I have just learned of this myself from watching Amanda’s video,” posted show co-creator Andrews Baron to the Yahoo! videoblogging group. “I guess it is in fact over.”
- The job offers start rolling in for Congdon. The most colorful comes from Weblogs, Inc’s Jason Calacanis, who not only offers Congdon a sweet deal, but calls her baby and says he’ll fight for her like a rabid dog.
- The official announcement comes from Rocketboom, which says that Congdon has quit to move to LA, and that the show will go on without her and be better than ever.
- Congdon accuses Baron of spreading misinformation, saying that Baron “insists on spinning things this way to shore up his assertion that I am ‘walking away’ from Rocketboom. I did not walk away. I did not accept Andrew’s idea of ‘partnership’.”
Is PodShow Hijacking Podcasts?
Jul 7th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Audio Podcasting, Podcasting Law
Some podcasters are “pissed” at PodShow, a podcast portal founded by podcasting pioneer Adam Curry. The site appears to be republishing podcaster’s podcast feeds, with changes, under PodShow URLs.”What was Podshow thinking?” asks Geek News Central’s Todd Cochrane. “Podshow has hijacked every listed podcasters RSS Feed, stripped out data and inserted their own info.”
The republishing of podcast feeds under different URLs has raised controversy in the past because it can infringe on podcaster’s copyrights, confuse listeners about the correct source for the podcast and make it impossible for podcasters to know how many people are subscribing to their podcast.

New Rocketboom Anchor #2: The Hottest Woman on the Planet
Jul 7th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Video Podcasts, Vlogs
Unsubstantiated rumor alert: If Rocketboom creator Andrew Baron doesn’t decide to go for the blonde & big-boned type to be the next host, he may be settling for Joanne Colan, aka The Hottest Woman on the Planet.”Rocketboom executive producer Andrew Baron has tapped former MTV Europe VJ Joanna Colan to take the anchor chair vacated by Amanda Congdon earlier this week,” according to the Huffington Post’s Rachel Skar.
“In addition to being a fetching blonde,” said Sklar, “Colan is also ‘smart and funny,’ according to a male fan, and brings to the show and the added credibility of an English accent.”
Baron declined to confirm the report, but plans to have Rocketboom back on the air Monday.

Event organizer, Mark Blevis (Electric Sky, Canadian Podcast Buffet, and podcastLounge.ca ) says of the gathering: “Podcasters Across Borders was an incredible success.
