Nielsen: Podcasts More Popular than Blogging

Jul 12th, 2006 | By | Category: Audio Podcasting, iPods & Portable Media Players, Podcasting Research, Podcasting Statistics

Nielsen//NetRatings announced today that 6.6 percent of the U.S. adult online population, or 9.2 million Web users, have recently downloaded an audio podcast. 4.0 percent, or 5.6 million Web users, have recently downloaded a video podcast.

These figures put the podcasting population on a par with those who publish blogs, 4.8 percent, and online daters, 3.9 percent. To put this in perspective, though, Nielsen notes that podcasting is not nearly as popular as paying bills online, 51.6 percent, or online job hunting, 24.6 percent.

“The portability of podcasts makes them especially appealing to young, on-the-go audiences,” said Michael Lanz, analyst, Nielsen//NetRatings. “We can expect to see podcasting become increasingly popular as portable content media players proliferate,” he continued.

Adam Curry Speaks Up About Podshow Podcast Hijacking Controversy

Jul 10th, 2006 | By | Category: Audio Podcasting, Strange

Adam Curry's second comingBeset by bad press in the blogosphere about this past week’s launch of PodShow + and its apparent hijacking of podcasters’ RSS feeds, PodShow founder Adam Curry addresses the issue in Saturday’s episode of his podcast, Daily Source Code.He talked about being away, attending the memorial service for his mother, who passed away last weekend, and his eventful trip back home.

“When I got back, ‚Ķ I popped open the browser only to see that I was ‘evil’; I was a ‘hijacker’ and ‘stealing feeds’ and being a bad dude, and uh, there‚Äôs a couple ways I could‚Äôve gone at that point. So I looked to the heavens and said, ‘Ok mom, give me some fucking strength, because now we‚Äôre in for a ride.'”

He explains the situation, which he describes as the “tinfoil hat moment” this way:”We pull all the info in from the original RSS feed, the podcast feed if you will, and… you have to have a local copy. Because the reliability of external feeds is just not that high. When we have the information, you want to hold onto that info for at least 15 minutes or until it‚Äôs requested again, so we can do all kinds of stuff with it, like simple ways to add it to channels, to share it with people‚Ķ

“We basically cache that, no different from what iTunes does.

New Site Offers Podcasters Air Time on Satellite Network

Jul 10th, 2006 | By | Category: Audio Podcasting, Podcasting Services

The Podcast Satellite Network (PSN) is offering podcasters the opportunity to purchase air time on an all-podcast satellite radio broadcast. The company plans to launch the Network in August, 2006.

According to PSN, “the Network has been created to uniquely serve the needs of podcasters looking for exposure to a significant second audience. PSN plans to meet that need by broadcasting its all-podcast lineup to all of North America via free to air (FTA) satellite radio.”

Free To Air (FTA) satellite radio is not as well-known as subscription satellite radio, such as Sirius or XM, but is growing in popularity, according to PSN. FTA offers both radio and TV digital broadcasts. It is called Free To Air because listeners in North America may access FTA programming legally at no cost. Listening requires the use of a Ku band satellite setup. These sell for as little as $150, with no subscription fees following, making FTA programming attractive to a growing number of consumers.

PSN is offfering FTA satellite radio airtime at the rate of $1/minute via the Podsat.net site.

Jul 9th, 2006 | By | Category: Audio Podcasting, Podcast Quickies, Podcasting Events

People planning on travelling to Austin for NAMM Summer Session 2006, a music and recording industry convention being held July 14-16, should check out the Austin Connection podcast.

In the podcast, host Jeffrye Glenn Tveraas talks to some of the best songwriters and musicians in the Austin area, and captures them performing their tunes and talking about their careers and music.

Here’s a description from the Austin Connection site:

If you’re a fan of Americana and new acoustic music this is a great way to discover some interesting and eclectic professional performers. All our podcasts are roughly 1/2 hour long and available in a high-quality stereo MP3 format, with new shows appearing weekly (sometimes more often).

All these performances are recorded here in Austin at Cheshire Moon studios just for this show. Some names you may recognize, some you may not, but all will represent the cream of the crop here in the “Live Music Capital of the World”.

Tveraas is a seasoned Austin player, and also has released a collection of ambient chillout music, Lake Effect.
