Get Personal with Jessica Simpson
Jul 25th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Educational Podcasts
Yahoo! wants you to have A Public Affair with Jessica Simpson, with no strings attached.Yahoo! is selling personalized versions of the new Jessica Simpson song A Public Affair from their Yahoo! Music web site. What makes it newsworthy is that Yahoo! is letting you get the track personalized with your name (a large list of names is available) and offering the digital download as an MP3, free of digital rights management limitations.
“We’ve also been saying that DRM has a cost. It’s very expensive for companies like Yahoo! to implement. We’d much rather have our engineers building better personalization, recommendations, playlisting applications, community apps, etc, instead of complex provisioning systems which at the end of the day allow you to burn a CD and take the DRM back off, anyway!” adds Rogers.
Apple Intros Wireless Mighty Mouse
Jul 25th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Computer HardwareApple today introduced the wireless Mighty Mouse, a new version of its multi-button mouse, with the added freedom of wireless connectivity.
The new wireless Mighty Mouse offers a secure connection to Macs and features a new laser tracking engine that Apple says is 20 times more sensitive than standard optical mice, for better tracking on more surfaces.
The wireless Mighty Mouse is a Bluetooth 2.0 based multi-button mouse that retains the simplicity of a single-button mouse, and can be used as a single- or multi-button mouse depending on the user’s preference. The wireless Mighty Mouse features a single seamless enclosure with programmable touch sensors that act as primary or secondary buttons. With a simple click on the upper right or left side of the mouse, users can instantly access features such as contextual menus found in Mac OS® X and other applications. The wireless Mighty Mouse’s two other buttons are activated by pressing its Scroll Ball and squeezing its sides, and can be easily programmed to give users one-click access to Mac OS X “Tiger” features such as Spotlight™, Dashboard and Exposé, or to launch any application such as Safari or iChat.
The wireless Mighty Mouse features an easy-to-use design that comfortably fits the left or right hand. It also includes an advanced power management system that automatically switches to low power modes during inactivity, and an off switch to maintain battery life while not in use. Ready to use out of the box, the wireless Mighty Mouse works with either one or two AA batteries.
Pricing & Availability
The wireless Mighty Mouse is available immediately through the Apple Store, at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $69 (US). The wireless Mighty Mouse easily connects to the latest Macs with built-in Bluetooth wireless technology, and requires Mac OS X “Tiger” version 10.4.6 or later to customize buttons for one-click access to Spotlight, Dashboard and Exposé or to launch applications.
Podcast Awards Site Announces Nominees; Creator Laments Sad State of Podcast Feeds
Jul 25th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Podcasting Events, Podcasting StatisticsPodcasting guru Todd Cochrane (Geek News Central, Blubrry.com) has announced the nominee slate for the 2006 People’s Choice Podcast Awards. Voting for the nominees will be open July 28th to August 11th.
Cochrane notes that the overall quality of the RSS feeds for podcasts that were nominated was surprisingly poor. “I have never been so utterly blown away by the sad state of affairs when it comes to podcasters’ RSS feeds, and some of the crap we have been sorting through,” notes Cochrane.
- 78% of the submissions had invalid feeds, according to FeedValidator.org.
- Of the remaining feeds, 96% had glaring errors.
- 42% did not have an RSS feed button on their home page.
- 26% did not have a link to the file in their show notes.
- 21% had less than 2 lines of show notes.
- Some feeds were huge, as big as 500K and 367 entries.
- Only 49% of the submissions provide a way to contact the podcaster.
- 200 of the submissions that called themselves podcasts had no podcast feeds.
“The more people that are doing shows, the lower the bar becomes in taking the time to make sure the most basic functions of a site is maintained,” laments Cochrane.

Dave Winer Starts New Podcast Directory Project
Jul 23rd, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Audio Podcasting, Podcast Directory SitesPodcast pioneer Dave Winer, who wrote the RSS 2.0 standard on which podcast distribution is built, has started building what he describes as a “community podcasting directory.”
Winer intends to recreate iPodder.org (now IndiePodder.org), one of the earliest podcast directories. iPodder’s architecture was unique, because it was a distributed directory built on Outline Processor Markup Language (OPML) text files, maintained by people around the world.
While iPodder was one of the first important podcast directories, it was limited by speed issues, dead nodes and other problems. This quickly led to the creation of dozens of other podcast directories. IndiePodder.org is now part of PodShow, which appears to be letting the site stagnate. The site was last updated five months ago.
Winer’s project is ambitious. It is faced with overcoming both the performance and availability issues that limited iPodder.org, and the political challenges that have sidelined community directory projects like the Open Directory Project.
