UK Police Blame iPods For 5% Rise In Robberies
Oct 20th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: iPods & Portable Media Players, StrangeUK police chiefs suggested yesterday that the iPod explosion could be behind a 5% increase in recorded robberies.
Ian Johnston, chief constable of the British transport police and spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said the rise was “a lot to do with the products that are available to be stolen these days. The mobile phone explosion is continuing. The iPod explosion is continuing. All of these gadgets that people carry around with them are very attractive to robbers, so that puts the opportunities up. We’ve obviously got to respond to that in a very positive way.”

Steve Jobs Gets Mad Poon; iPod Owners Get Virus
Oct 20th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Computer Hardware, iPods & Portable Media Players, Strange
Earlier this week, Apple issued a warning that some of its iPods are infected with a Windows virus. Some video iPods made after Sept. 12 were shipped infected with the RavMonE virus. The virus affects only Windows computers
In a unusual PR move, Apple blamed their manufacturing problem on Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
“As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it,” said Apple.
The blogosphere doesn’t seem to be buying Apple’s excuse. No one, however, seems more upset than Microsoft’s Jonathan Poon, who handles virus scanning for releases at Microsoft.
“Where’s your class?” Your integrity?” Poon asks Apple, noting that, instead of focusing on how and why the Virus was included in the first place, the company tried to divert the blame on the Windows platform.
Poon even offers to show Apple CEO Steve Jobs how to practice safe checks.
“Steve, if you need someone to advise on how to improve your quality checks, feel free to contact me, ” adds Poon.

New App Creates iTunes Playlists By Mood
Oct 20th, 2006 | By James Lewin | Category: Digital Music, iPods & Portable Media Players
Potion Factory has released a beta release of Tangerine, an application designed to create playlists based on the BPM and beat intensity of the songs in your iTunes library.
“We came up with the idea after I noticed that I was spending a good 30 minutes to come up with about 30 tracks for working out. I would repeat the process fairly often and I was getting tired of it and tired of listening to the same songs over and over again. So we developed Tangerine to automate that process. The app should pay for itself for some people. It should be really handy for Nike+ users and if you‚Äôre not, this app may motivate you to get one because there‚Äôs nothing like running to the beat of the music to keep you motivated,” they note.
The app is Mac OS X Tiger only, and is limited to ripped tracks because it can’t analyze tracks encrypted with Apple’s DRM.
