New Media Links For 11/12/2008

Nov 12th, 2008 | By | Category: Internet TV, Video

New Media Links For 11/12/2008:

  • The U.S. military is taking on YouTube. It’s launched TroopTube – a site for troops, their families and supporters – a year and a half after restricting access to YouTube and other video sites. It’s like YouTube, but without the audience.
  • blinkx is claiming to have 32 million hours of video indexed in its search engine, which uses speech recognition to identify words spoken within the video.
  • Fast Company thinks Hulu, not YouTube, will dominate the future of video. This echoes what we were saying in July: Hulu has built a library of long tail content with advertisers lined up to sponsor it; YouTube has built up a library of long tail user-generated content that’s very difficult or, in some cases, impossible to get sponsors for. You can’t count YouTube out, though, because it’s moving fast to copy Hulu’s model.

Sunny Day! Sesame Street Celebrates 39th Birthday, New Media Style

Nov 12th, 2008 | By | Category: Educational Podcasts, General, Internet TV, Podcasting, Video, Video Podcasts

Popular children’s program “Sesame Street” is celebrating its 39th year on the air with a move into Internet media, a Reuters article reports.

The public television show, which debuted in 1969, is broadcast in 140 countries, and now will also be available on Hulu, YouTube, and via the iTunes Music Store, according to Sesame Workshop (fka the Children’s Television Workshop).

Clips are free on YouTube and Hulu. At Apple’s iTunes store, people can download full episodes from the past four seasons for $1.99 apiece. iTunes already features some Sesame Street programing, such as “Happy Healthy Ready for School” featuring (my least favorite Muppet) Elmo. You can read more about Sesame Street’s free video podcast here.

Sesame Workshop will get 70 percent of the revenue in the iTunes deal, but the number of viewers is not likely to be a big one at first, said Terry Fitzpatrick, Sesame’s vice president of distribution. (“at first”, or ever, I wonder? People are growing finicky about when and whether they will pay directly for video content, a la iTunes, or if they’ll “pay” indirectly, by watching ads on Hulu content. That’s another discussion for another day.)

YouTube’s Sesame Street channel already has more than 100 clips from the show, including favorites like Grover the waiter. Hulu will feature 100 Sesame Street segments and 30 other segments featuring celebrity guests such as Norah Jones, Johnny Cash and Patrick “Melancholy Dane” Stewart.

P.S.  Sesame Street must be in the zeitgeist this week. This week, I’ve been listening to a wicked mash-up of Muppet Show / Sesame Street songs on an older episode of DJ Deedle’s Deedlecast. Very catchy.

Wizzard Posts Rosy Q3 Revenue Results

Nov 12th, 2008 | By | Category: Making Money with Podcasts, Podcast Distribution, Podcasting, Video, Video Podcasts

Pittsburgh-based Wizzard Software announced Monday third-quarter revenues of $1,533,339, a 4% increase over revenues of $1,468,476 during Q3 2007. The company also reported revenues of $4,667,690 during the nine month period ended September 30, 2008, a 29% increase over revenues of $3,622,499 for the same period in 2007.

Wizzard provides online publishing tools for podcast media producers, connects advertisers with appropriate media content and distributes the resulting shows to subscribers. Over the past 18 months, the company has also acquired podcast hosting companies Switchpod, Libsyn, and Blast Podcast.

The Wizzard revenue report comes one day after that of Revision3. Rev3 also reported rosy revenues, although that news came in the wake of staff and programming reductions.

In the company’s announcement, Wizzard’s management said they continue to see exceptional network growth: “The potential for monetizing the consumption of media distributed over the Internet and via mobile devices like the iPhone, by connecting advertisers with online media publishers, will significantly surpass the search marketing business in the next 5 to 10 years. We believe Wizzard Media … has the potential to be a significant force in the future of media monetization and distribution over the internet.”

Video podcasting/Internet television startup Revision3 today announced its results for 2008, highlighting revenue tripling from last year, viewership growing to 140 million minutes of engagement monthly and more than 60 advertising partners.

“Despite today’s tumultuous economic climate, Revision3 is making huge strides, dramatically increasing both viewership and revenue,” said Jim Louderback, CEO, Revision3. “Like everyone else, we’re being cautious in how we approach 2009, but we anticipate continued growth over the coming months.”

In October, Revision3 cut staff and eliminated several shows from its lineup.

Revision3’s 2008 highlights include:

  • Increased content distribution: Revision3 has signed more than 40 deals with content providers over the past year, including Hulu, YouTube, MySpace and Yahoo.
  • Higher audience percentages: With reach doubling in 2008, Revision3 maintains a strong connection with the male, age 18-34 audience.

MGM Deal Puts Stake In Heart Of YouTube As We Know It

Nov 10th, 2008 | By | Category: Citizen Media, Internet TV, Video

GooTube Logo

Back in 2006, we said that YouTube As You Know It Is Dead, arguing that Google’s desire to make YouTube “legitimate” would kill off the site’s user-generated focus:

Google’s announcement places emphasis on the legal distribution of professionally produced content. “The combined companies will offer new opportunities for professional content owners to distribute their work to reach a vast new audience,” notes Google in its announcement.

With a $1.65 billion valuation, YouTube will have to regulate the use of traditionally copyrighted music and video in videos posted to the site. It’s also likely that mainstream ad-supported content will be featured prominently at the site, putting video bloggers in the same position that audio podcasters have found themselves in at the iTunes store.

It’s taken longer than we expected, but our prediction is starting to play out.

Google has announced a deal with MGM to feature full-length movies and videos on YouTube – a deal that puts a stake in the heart of YouTube as we know it.

YouTube will now show full-length television shows and films from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s archives. User-generated videos will be competing against full-length movies like Bulletproof Monk, Legally Blonde and The Magnificent Seven. YouTube already has a deal in place to run full-length CBS shows, including Star Trek, Young and the Restless and Beverly Hills 90210.

YouTube’s Most Viewed lists are already dominated by corporate content. This move will only make it harder for interesting user-generated content to get noticed at the site.
